Grass Volleyball

Whether you're a seasoned player or just looking to have some fun in the sun, this version of volleyball has a charm that's hard to resist.

In Eastern Pennsylvania, grass is king. It's a great opportunity to get outside and stay active while having a blast with your friends.

Grass volleyball is a variation of outdoor volleyball that combines some of the best elements from both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. It’s traditionally played as doubles, triples, or quads, and you don't need a gym or sand court. Any park or field with grass will do.

Eastern Pennsylvania is home to the Pottstown Rumble, one of the largest grass volleyball tournaments in the world. One of the things that makes Pottstown unique is playing by “Old School Rules.” These rules have been adopted for most tournaments in the region, including the Susquehanna Smash, and East Coast Volleyball’s Summer Series, and we run Philadelphia Volleyball events by similar rules.

Key "Old School" rules

  • No Let serves (serve touching the net)
  • Block does not count as a touch
  • No open-hand tips, sets or pushes over the net
